Kitten Season

Coming soon to a shelter near you!

Kitten Season. What is it?  Maybe you've heard animal shelter staff or animal rescue workers mention this stranger-than-fiction phenomenon during the spring months? Even Twitter has a #kittenseason these days.

Kitten Season refers to a time when we prepare ourselves for the flood of infant kittens that will, and now are, streaming through our doors. Sure kittens are adorable, but think about how hard it must be when you have 80 to 100 of these very needy babies arriving each week. That is our reality.

Cats go into heat many times over the course of a year. In the northern states cats begin breeding in early spring and usually ends in late fall. Kittens can go into heat as early as 4 months old. The gestation period averages about 64 days before kittens are born.

The problem is not the kittens themselves, but the effect that their high population has on the rest of the cats in the facility. When so many of them enter the system at one time, it taxes our resources, and other cats often have to wait longer for a home since kittens tend to get adopted more quickly.

What can you do? Please spay and neuter early, and encourage anyone who has kittens and cats to do the same. It is safe and healthy for your feline to be fixed after they weigh 2 pounds, and before they turn 5 months old.

When you adopt a kitten or cat from the Humane Society of Huron Valley they have been vaccinated and sterilized. Also, in an effort to reduce cat overpopulation, we are able provide spay/neuter surgeries through our veterinary clinic which is open to the public. In June, in partnership with PetSmart Charities, we are offering kitten spay/neuter for $20 while appointments last.  Kittens are considered any feline 6 months or younger. Call 1-888-474-8349.
