Love Starts Here
HSHV has been around since 1896. We are an award-winning animal welfare organization dedicated to saving the lives and reducing the suffering of homeless and abused animals. We are recognized for innovative best practices and having the highest animal "save rate" among all similar shelters in Michigan.
Walk & Wag is HSHV's largest annual fundraiser. Simply put, none of this work is possible without the support of generous and caring people like you. Proceeds help support our work to rescue, care for, and create new beginnings for the most vulnerable animals in our community.
HSHV has again earned the 4-Star Charity Navigator Ranking (that is 7-straight years, if you’re counting). This is not an easy award to earn, or to maintain, but it shows how effective we are, and how carefully we manage all funds from donors like you. You can be sure that a dollar donated to HSHV is put to the best use!
Awards and rankings are one thing, but being here every day I can see the work done to earn those accolades, and it is astonishing, and awesome to behold. The Intake staff going above and beyond to track down the owners of strays to reunite lost animals with their people. Animal Care staff carefully scrubbing out kennels every morning before the doors open so the animals don't get sick and have a nice place to live until we can find them a home. The Shelter Medical team giving every animal the medical care they need. Adoptions staff working hard to match people with the right animal for their home, family, and lifestyle. The Foster team working 8 days a week to match up animals in our care that are in need of something more than shelter life with families with a little extra space and love in their home. Everyone in the Clinic moving heaven and earth to take care of thousands of owned animals from our community. The Humane Education crew working every day to teach children (and adults) in our community the importance of being compassionate and humane towards domestic and wild animals. The Animal Behavior team assessing each animal as the individual it is, and crafting a thoughtful plan for any animal in our care that is struggling either physically, mentally, or behaviorally, working hard to ensure they all get the mental stimulation, attention and love that they need. Our Cruelty and Rescue team investigating cruelty complaints as well as being on call, 24/7/365 to respond to animals, either wild or domestic, in trouble and in need of rescue. The Love Train folks working about 25 hours over the course of a day and a half to bring dozens of animals from high kill shelters in the south up to HSHV, where families line up every other Friday to take them home. The Tiny Lions staff taking care of 12-20 cats, and many more humans, at the first Cat Adoption Lounge in Michigan. And those are just the customer facing people the public sees. Behind the scenes there is a small army of Back Office and Maintenance staff, an energetic and engaged Board, and a huge army of Volunteers that all work miracles every day so this place can continue to look great and function smoothly.
Your donation will help support all of this fantastic work, and you’ll have my thanks, and many animals’ silent thanks as well.
Thank you, sincerely, for any support you can give!
