The Campaign to Build a New Shelter

The Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) is 110 years old and is the only animal shelter in Washtenaw County that takes in all types of unwanted, injured, lost, stray, abandoned and abused animals. Each year we help over 10,000 dogs, cats, rabbits and other small animals.

The current shelter, originally built in 1951, is dilapidated and overcrowded, and suffers from inadequate cleaning systems, air quality, and noise control. This, combined with a poor layout, (e.g., cats next to barking dogs, little isolation for sick animals) causes the spread of disease and high levels of stress creating sickness and behavioral problems that can affect an animal’s adoptability. The dark and dank feel repels potential adopters, and the overall conditions make the work of dedicated volunteers and staff much more difficult.

We are determined to build a modern facility - one that will allow HSHV to be a model of best practices in animal sheltering, prevention services, and community support - one that will save more lives and give more animals a second chance at finding loving, lifelong homes.

Our Plans for the Future

The new 26,000-square-foot Humane Society building will be located at our current 3100 Cherry Hill Rd. location, just south of where the existing building is now situated.

The new building will provide a healthy, low-stress, family-friendly environment to house cats, dogs, and other animals that need homes. The design of the shelter will provide ample space, state-of-the-art noise and disease control, and stress-reducing animal housing.

Goals for the New Shelter:

  • Send an e-card

Increase adoptions and reduce euthanasia by offering the best care for our animals and people.
  • Reduce stress to keep our animals healthier, happier and more adoptable.
  • Prevent disease to keep our animals from getting sick thereby reducing euthanasia.
  • Create warm and welcoming facilities to provide the best customer service possible, and bring in more potential adopters.
  • Allow more opportunities for socialization between people and animals so they can bond more quickly, thereby increasing adoptions.
  • Focus on education and prevention to address the root causes of animal abuse, homelessness, abandonment and overpopulation.
  • Create a more efficient and healthy work space so we can do our work more effectively.
  • Become a better neighbor by being quieter, more aesthetically
    pleasing, and more environmentally friendly.
