Pocky the Cat - an Unexpected Soul Mate
Adopted in October, 2010
We stopped into HSHV that day with no intention of getting a new kitty. It was the first Kittypalooza event after the new facility opened, and I thought it would be the perfect time to see the new facility and say "Hi" to all the kitties.
He was in the very first cat room we entered - this adorable half-grown white and orange kitty with big amber eyes and an even bigger mouth. The second we walked in, he started meowing his head off. You couldn't ignore him. It was as if he was saying "Where the heck have you been? You were supposed to come get me! I've been here for 4 days and you wouldn't believe all the stuff they've done to me! What took you so long?"
We petted him and petted him while he continued to complain about our tardiness. He rubbed against the front of the cage, did summersaults and all kinds of other gymnastic stunts. When we finally began to slowly move away to see the kitties in the other cages, he lay down and stuck his paws through the bars, crying loudly, as if to say "Pick me! Pick me!"
That was all I could take. I knew he was mine. We went through the adoption process and had him home an hour later.
He was ecstatic - as was I. The first couple of nights he had to sleep right next to my face. After that I convinced him to sleep curled up against my chest, and he has been there every night since. He greets me at the door when I come home from work, and on the occasional weekends I visit my parents, he walks around meowing sadly even though he has another loving guardian there with him. I've never had a cat that is so "imprinted" on me. It is as if he and I were meant to be.
He is perfect with my other kitties, too. Not aggressive, but not fearful either. Their territorial concertos when he first arrived didn't bother him a bit. He acted like "Hey, I'm here now. Deal with it." I also found out recently that he is (at least in large part) a Turkish Van, which explains why we have to keep the toilet lids closed so he doesn't get in there and splash around. And his aerial antics (that often defy gravity) are always a great source of entertainment.
Thank you, HSHV, for everything you do for the puppies, kitties, and other assorted creatures in our area, and for giving me the current feline love of my life: Pocky the Cat.
