What makes HSHV so special?

Giving animals a second chance at a happy life

GabeWhat makes HSHV so special?

Well, we could go on and on, but the reason we are an award-winning shelter with a fantastic animal “save rate” is because we are dedicated first and foremost to saving the lives of those who need us most.

Because of this dedication, you may notice that some of our animals are a bit past their prime, or are on medication for some kind of sickness -- often due to abuse, abandonment and neglect.

We don’t, however, see these animals as “damaged” and surely don’t want to euthanize an animal for conditions that are not dangerous and do not create suffering.   Animals are incredibly resilient and forgiving, and have so much love to give.  We want them to have a second chance at a happy life!

So, our animals sometimes come to us with physical, emotional or behavioral issues that we treat.

In fact, sometimes when an animal goes up for adoption they are still under medical or behavioral treatment and may still be on  medication or need additional training.

Sometimes we have evaluated an animal and decided that they have a condition that can be managed in a home by a loving and patient owner who wouldn’t mind a 10 year old, three-legged cat, with a cold caused by being abandoned outside. People often fall in love with pets because of how they relate to them.  Sometimes animals pick us.

This year I took home a 11 year old German Shepherd after his owner turned him in when the family home was foreclosed on.  Though we will have just a few short years together and he will be on medication for those years, he is, without question, one of the coolest dogs I have ever known and I feel privileged to have him in my life.

No matter what, we respect the adoption choice that fits your lifestyle.  One of these special needs animals may not be for you.  But maybe an imperfect animal will be the perfect companion for you.
