Pet Safety Tips for the Holidays

Here are some easy tips to keep pets safe this holiday.

On the eve of Thanksgiving it’s a good time to remember some small, but very helpful safety tips.  We know pet parents like to include their furry friends in all the festivities but if you can keep their routine as close to normal as possible, it will help them remain relaxed during this busy time.

Be sure to steer your pets clear of:

  • Toxic plants
    • Holly, mistletoe and many varieties of lilies are poisonous
    • Tinsel and ribbons
    • Many cats can’t resist these items and if digested end up with an obstructed bowel. It’s best to avoid tinsel and to make sure all ribbon is put away after use.
  • Treats and left-over’s
    • Many human treats can make pets very ill. Chocolate and anything sweetened with xylitol are bad, as well as spicy, fatty and any food that might contain bones. You might be aware of the list of no-no foods but your guests may not. Keep the garbage lids closed tight and remember to tell your guests that nibbles under the table are not allowed.
  • Candles all aglow
    • Ambiance is nice but candles are easily knocked over by pets and if you’re entertaining and unaware, an accident can be fatal. Make sure lit candles are attended too and have sturdy holders.
  • Noise and Bustle
    • Some pets do enjoy a crowd but others are happy to sit-out the festivities in a quiet space complete with water and pet food of their own.
