Meet Alexandra, our 1,500th Adoption of 2012

Alexandra and her new family

Congratulations to the Czajka family of Ann Arbor, who adopted Alexandra from one of our foster homes.

Every adoption at HSHV is celebrated by the staff and volunteers who come to know each homeless animal they care for. On June 21, however, the Czajka family of Ann Arbor adopted a wonderful adult cat named Alexandra from one of our foster homes, making her the 1,500th adoption of 2012.

"Reaching the 1,500th adoption in June was particularly gratifying," said Renee Benell, HSHV Adoptions and Customer Service Manager. "Last year at this time we had just over 1,200 adoptions and with our shelter being so full, it's encouraging that people are making the choice to adopt a homeless pet from a shelter."

Alexandra is an 8-month-old Lynx-point mix who was brought to us as a stray. She had been living outside looking for food in a trailer park; she was under-socialized, and very scared in the general.

"When I was asked to foster Alexandra in my home I was hopeful her real personality would emerge once she felt safe," said Jessica Anderson, volunteer and foster home caregiver. "I was so pleased that she became a little lap cat pretty quickly. There is nothing more rewarding than knowing that a home environment and a little TLC can make the world of difference for a cat who at many places would have never been given a second chance."

We currently have 155 animals available for adoption in the shelter, plus 215 homeless pets in foster homes. While some foster animals will come back to HSHV for adoption, others like Alexandra will be adopted right out of their foster family's home.

In addition to adopting, we always need more people willing to open their homes temporarily to animals like Alexandra. This kind of life-saving care can make all the difference for a homeless animal. Anyone interested in learning more about providing foster care to homeless animals should contact us at www.hshv.org or call (734) 661-3520.
