Mikey

Our fur baby Mike(y)
Our fur baby Mike(y)

Adopted in July 2011

We found Mike on the eve of a kittenpalooza this summer. When we opened his cage, after getting our pink slip and wiping down with hand sanitizer first, of course, both he and his sister came right up to us. Rubbing their heads on our arms and purring loudly we knew we had a difficult decision. Of course the staff at HSHV was encouraging us to get both but we looked at the two and said Mike was the one. I guarded the cage while my wife went to turn in his paper work. After a short car ride to our old farmhouse in Belleville, Mike was home, my wife was in love and I went to work kitten-proofing our house.

At the time I was working out of a home office so I got the enjoyment of watching Mike grow and seeing first hand how interesting a seemingly boring keyboard can be to a kitten. Mike would even join me on my conference calls to Japan where at one point I was talking and then a loud MEOW came from Mike. The line went silent and our President asked if that was a cat? I then introduced them to Mike.

To be honest, the best man in our wedding name is Mike, so we thought it was a bit strange to have a kitten named Mike. My wife and I thought for days what we should name him. Smigeltron? Hando? Bob? I had set a deadline of midnight that Wednesday at which point his name would stick as Mike. Midnight came and my wife couldn't pick. So I took the reigns and came up with the name Mikey. It stuck. Now granted, a lot of the vets call him Mickey, where at that point my wife or I are quick to correct like any good parent.

We couldn't be happier with our new family member Mikey and he spends his days chasing laser pointers, watching birds, stalking our feet and my personal favorite, riding around on our shoulders like a parrot. I think he's happy too. There may be an unhappy Mikey picture with his Devil costume on at Halloween, but that's the only angry picture, I swear!

Though I will admit the 6 AM Cat-Scan Mikey performs by purring at 100 dB while licking and chewing on my chin is a bit rough on the weekends. During the week, it's the best alarm clock ever!

I would like to thank the staff at HSHV for doing such a great job preparing the kittens for homes and creating such a wonderful environment for the animals and the adopters. We tell everyone looking for a dog or cat to go to the HSHV first! We even got my coworker to adopt Barnum a few weeks ago and they couldn't be happier as well!
