Maggie

Adopted in 2006

Hello: My name is Maggie and I have been meaning to send a Happy Tails for the longest time but my mom never has the time to type for me. Indeed, I was adopted from the "old" shelter about five years ago, my name then was Penny but probably no one remembers me anymore. I was listed as the proverbial "German Sheppard dog mix" but in reality I am mostly Akita (with some Sheppard and Scottish terrier that we don't talk about my mom had me DNA tested because I am so pretty). I just wanted to share some things about my life and tell everyone thinking about adoption that shelter dogs really are the best. I know some people think that maybe there is something wrong with us because we are in the shelter but that's simply not true. I was about three years old when I was found as a stray. I came to my new home fully house-trained. I don't chew anything and I don't bark (except for one little woof when I want to come inside and no one is paying attention to me sitting by the door). I love to ride in the car and can even go on 14-hour road trips without complaint. My photos show me right after I was adopted and just a few weeks ago when I was on the beach in South Carolina. I love the beach and am a good swimmer. You can see that I've put on a little weight over the years but my vet says that this is a "breed" trait and not my fault (I do like that doggie ice cream though). For the past two years I have been volunteering at the HSHV as a big sister to a lot of foster cats and kittens. We have had one dog foster but every other time we have tried to foster a canine sibling for me they get adopted during our dog interaction. I guess I am good luck for other shelter dogs. I am very good with the cats although sometimes they swipe at me and I will chase them if the run right in front of me sometimes you just can't help yourself. I am having a very happy life and my humans would not know what to do without me. Please remember that if you are thinking of getting a pet shelter animals really do rule.
