Spring and Summer (formerly Orchid and Catherine Zeta Jones)

Spring and Summer
Spring and Summer

Adopted in Summer 2010

Last summer we decided to adopt a kitten to liven up our household which includes two 11 year old dogs, two 14 year old cats, and three kids. Because we already had 4 animals I (stupidly) resisted the urge to adopt a sibling pair and picked out Spring (formally known as Orchid). She was 3 months old and so sweet and cute the kids wanted to pet her all day long. However, on the second night that we had her, as she tried to get comfortable on my lap to go to sleep, I realized that she needed one of her siblings to cuddle with. The next day I called the HSHV to find out which of her two sisters and one brother were still there. Fortunately for them, unfortunately for us, they had all been adopted. We went to the shelter anyway to find a friend for Spring and had no luck. I went two more times and even checked out the kitten foster program. You see, with other animals in the house I really wanted a bold, energetic kitten about the same size and age of Spring and none of the kittens seemed quite right. A few days later we tried one final time and there she was- Summer (formerly known as Catherine Zeta Jones). We had seen her on our second visit and liked how playful she was with her brothers but when we went in the room with her she was terrified of us and actually trembled. The next time I didn’t see her so I figured she had been adopted but it turns out she was being spayed. When we saw her again, after 5 days in the shelter, she was friendly, playful, purred easily, and was so cute!! I guess she needed some time to get used to people.

Spring and Summer play with each other and sleep all tangled up together. While Spring is floppy and jumps up as high as she can go in every room (including into our Christmas tree!), Summer is the mother of the house: washing everyone (including the dogs). The kittens have definitely livened up our house-- even getting our adult cats to play with them. Thank-you HSHV for all that you do for animals in our area! We found five of our six pets at your shelter!

Here’s advice to others who are looking to adopt: adopt a perfect pair or sibling group so your animals will have someone to cuddle with right from the start!
