Bailey Wants You to Protect Your Pets!

Heartworm prevention a must for every pet owner

BaileyThis is Bailey. Bailey is a young, friendly beagle, who came to us because she tested positive for heartworm. Her owner was unable to afford the treatment. Heartworm is a serious but usually curable condition that affects the lungs and heart of its host. It is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito and is fatal if left untreated.

The good news: heartworm is easily preventable with an inexpensive, chewable pill available with a vet's prescription. "Prevention is much easier than treatment for heartworm infection," says Dr. Meredith Mallory, HSHV's shelter vet. "Treatment for infection is expensive and requires complete rest during the recovery period." Weeks of complete cage rest: something that Bailey--an active dog--wasn't terribly happy about!

Cats can get heartworm too, but for cats there is no treatment available after infection. So if you let your kitties romp in the yard, please be sure to put them on a regular heartworm preventative as well.

Danger of infection for pets begins in the spring after a few weeks of warm weather, so if your pets are not on preventative, now is the time to get them started. Contact our clinic today at (734) 662-4365 to make an appointment for a heartworm test and to get your preventative. To encourage everyone to make sure their pets are protected, we've included a coupon for $5 off a year's supply of heartworm preventative.

The good news for Bailey is that she was adopted by a loving family, has been responding well to the heartworm treatment--and will be on preventative!
