Help Us End Pit Bull Overpopulation

A note from Executive Director, Tanya Hilgendorf

Donny and MarieOn October 19th, the Ypsilanti Township Trustees will take a final vote on a proposed ordinance we've developed in partnership with them to require spay/neuter of pit bulls.

I am sure you are aware, we have an extreme overpopulation of pit bulls in our community, most of which come from Ypsilanti Township. Sadly, pit bulls are the number one breed of dog coming through our door; the number one breed of dog involved in abuse/neglect cases; the number one breed of dog running stray; and, the number one breed of dog euthanized.

As hard as we try, we know we can't fix this problem alone. We need the community working with us to solve this tragic and overwhelming situation. This is not a breed ban! This is a positive way of preventing a breed ban, which some people are calling for, and a way of preventing irresponsible ownership, and the suffering that ensues.

Plus, HSHV has a grant from PetSmart Charities that allows our wonderful Clinic to spay/neuter pit bulls in the Ypsilanti area for free! The Ypsilanti Township leadership have been wonderful partners in trying to address this problem. There was not strong public opposition to the proposal BUT, as word spreads, I know that more people will come to speak out against it.

If you live in Ypsilanti Township, please consider attending the October 19th Trustee meeting (at 7pm at the Ypsilanti Township Civic Center) and to thank the Trustees for their foresight, and support the ordinance and our beloved pit bulls.

If you'd like to voice your support but can't make the meeting, contact information for the Ypsilanti Township Trustees is available here.

Big thanks from Donnie and Marie (pictured here) and the rest of our pitties!
