The perfect furry friend

We adopted Winston from HSHV in 2013. When we first met him, we could tell immediately that he was an exceptionally gentle and sweet dog. But, even though his stay at HSHV was pretty short, Winston was a bit depressed and remained sad and confused for a while when we first took him home. Thanks to toys and playtime, he eventually came out of his shell. After lots of training (including at HSHV!) and socializing, we became a therapy dog team in 2015 and having a "job" has really allowed Winston to shine. On the job, he is calm , confident and composed and he loves his visits with patients, senior citizens and university students. It is so sweet to see this big mutt who once needed help himself give back to the community now. On occasion, we have taken other HSHV dogs on shelter breaks and Winston has been the perfect neutral and calming dog that helps them enjoy their day out - I think he is a therapy dog not just for humans but also for other dogs!

Winston has been an all around great dog for us. We take him anywhere dogs can go, and he has been such a reliable and relaxed companion who navigates busy streets, crowded restaurant patios or the excitement of a campground as calmly as he does the parks of Ann Arbor. We could not have asked for a more perfect furry friend!
