Help us avoid a cat-astrophe!

FREE adult cat adoptions through Wednesday, Sept. 28

cats2.jpgcats1.jpgAnn Arbor, MI (September 23, 2016) – The Humane Society of Huron Valley is chock-full of cats. So now through Wednesday, all adult cats are free.

“We’ve had a summer full of kittens, so our adult cats have been waiting longer for loving homes. HSHV is unique in that we do not euthanize for lack of space, and our animals have no time limits. So when we’re out of space and our intakes outpace our adoptions, we may have no choice but to turn away cats who need us—but we’d rather give them to loving, responsible homes for free,” says Tanya Hilgendorf, HSHV’s CEO and president.

HSHV has nearly 70 adult cats who are hoping to find homes this week.

HSHV’s “Free Adult Cat” promotion runs through Wednesday, September 28, and adult cats are those over 5 months old. All cats ready for adoption have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, tested for feline leukemia, given flea preventative and a microchip I.D. Adopters also receive a discount for their first health exam at the HSHV Veterinary Clinic.

The monetary value for the free adoption is well over $400—“And that doesn’t include the invaluable gift of unconditional love,” says Krista Donohoo, HSHV’s adoption manager.

“Some people express concern that free adoptions attract people who won’t care for the animal,” says Donohoo. “But there have been numerous studies showing that waiving adoption fees simply attracts more attention and more adopters—and that adopters of free cats value their cats just as much as others. Plus, our caring staff meet with every potential adopter. We discuss their family’s needs to ensure the pet is a good match, and we discuss that though there’s no adoption fee for these cats, there are costs of caring for a pet—including food, toys, and veterinary care.”

“Our shelter is state-of-the-art, but there’s no place like home,” says Donohoo. “We’re grateful to everyone who helps us get the message out that HSHV has amazing cats in every color you can imagine—all in need of great homes.”

HSHV is open for adoptions seven days a week (Monday through Wednesday 11-6, Thursday and Friday 11-7, Saturday and Sunday 11-5) and is located at 3100 Cherry Hill Road in Ann Arbor. Photos and descriptions of cats available for adoption are on HSHV’s website at www.hshv.org/cats.
