Walk & Wag and Run raises over 290,000 "bones" for homeless animals

And receives MPFA's award for Outstanding Shelter, thanks to you!

DSC03080.jpgAnn Arbor, MI (June 2, 2016) – Tails were wagging as the Humane Society of Huron Valley’s (HSHV)“Walk & Wag and Run” benefit attracted nearly 700 dogs, 1,200 animal lovers, over $290,000 in donations, sponsorships and raffle ticket sales, and an award from the Michigan Pet Fund Alliance (MPFA) for being an “outstanding” shelter.

The benefit took place on Saturday, May 21 at Rolling Hills County Park in Ypsilanti. It was the 37th year for Walk & Wag, and the sixth year in a row HSHV has been awarded by the MPFA for “Outstanding Large, Open Admission Shelter with the Best Save Rate.”

MPFA Chairperson Debbie Schutt commented on HSHV’s best practices and on their leadership’s resounding dedication to saving every life possible, noting that when other shelters want to know how they can do better, Schutt refers them to HSHV.

Members of HSHV’s Board of Directors accepted the award, thanking staff, volunteers and community supporters.

“Pat yourselves on the back,” said HSHV’s CEO and president, Tanya Hilgendorf. “This award is for you, the community. Saving animals is expensive and difficult, and it’s only because of you, your efforts and your support that HSHV can continue this important work—healing, protecting, educating, and valuing every life.”

We cannot thank the community enough,” says Kate Murphy, HSHV Board Member. “We depend on the support of the walkers, runners and ‘cat nappers’ of this one-day event to sustain animals’ needs all year long. It’s a common misconception that we’re supported by a national organization, but the truth is HSHV is independent and local. The funds raised here go directly to the care of animals here in Washtenaw County and Plymouth and are crucial to saving the animals in our backyards.”

Murphy also adds that HSHV has consistently been awarded Charity Navigator’s top “four-star” rating for sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency, and just received it again for the fifth straight year.
