Twelve Dogs Seized from Ypsilanti Township Hoarder

Now receiving medical care, they'll require special adopters

investigator2.jpgYpsilanti Twp, MI (May 3, 2016) – On April 28, twelve dogs—ten Beagles, a Chihuahua and a Dachshund—were taken from an Ypsilanti Township home for unsanitary conditions and lack of care. The home was filled with garbage and debris, and the dogs were matted with feces and covered in urine stains. Nine of the dogs were living in small, unlined crates littered in their own waste.

The dogs were brought to the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) for evaluation and treatment. One dog, unable to eliminate, received emergency surgery at HSHV to remove a bladder stone. Others were found to have a variety of other untreated medical conditions. As all but four of the dogs are unsterilized, it is believed the dogs were being used for breeding.

“It’s always so sad to see animals in these conditions.  They are kept as prisoners with no way out.  The dogs are incredibly gentle and sweet, but they are very frightened.  They have not been properly socialized – they don’t even know how to walk on a leash,” says Michele Baxter, HSHV’s Cruelty and Rescue Manager.

“Most of the dogs have already been surrendered to us and will be going up for adoption once they have received necessary medical care,” says Tanya Hilgendorf, HSHV’S CEO and president. “We know they will make sweet, loving companions, though they will need adopters who will understand where they came from and will be patient with their progress and be able to meet any future medical needs.”

The home was deemed “unfit for occupancy” by Ypsilanti Township officials.
