"I wasn't going to adopt"

How 10-year old 3-legged Christmas Rose changed her mind

"I wasn't going to adopt; I already have two dogs and thought I was done," says Adriana.Christmas Rose the dog

But then along came Christmas Rose.

Struggling to run out of oncoming traffic, the tiny toy poodle was found in the middle of the road in December—her leg dislocated, the surrounding muscles withered away. Covered in mats, riddled with mammary tumors, and crying from pain, this senior pup cried out for a Christmas miracle.

"Christmas Rose" got what she needed. She received multiple surgeries, medication, and rehabilitation from HSHV staff and volunteers. Though her leg was in too poor of a condition to be saved, Christmas Rose didn't seem to notice it was amputated. She was placed in a foster home where she received major doses of love and patience. When Christmas Rose learned how to climb the stairs in her foster home, we knew she was ready for adoption.

And that's where Adriana came in.

"I got that email about Christmas Rose's story, and I couldn't sleep for days. I thought, 'She's really cute; she'll find a home.'"

Fortuitously, Adriana emailed the Adoptions team at HSHV... "just in case," Adriana says.

"And they told me, yes, she has someone interested in her, so then I told myself it was all fine... until I got the call."

Christmas Rose the dogAs it turns out, Christmas Rose wasn't a fit with the first adopter who was interested in her, so HSHV called the next person on the list: Adriana. Adriana went up to meet the little 10-year-old pup, bringing her two current dogs, Eddie and Taco.

"My dogs loved her, and she was happy with them, so I thought, 'Okay, we're a family now.'"

Today, Adriana reports her adorable furry trio is doing really well. Though Taco and Eddie have understandably expressed a little jealousy in having a "new baby," Adriana says that luckily, Christmas Rose is content sitting by her and doesn't demand too much petting, leaving her hands free to pet the other ones. And recently, they've all begun sharing the bed—we presume with Adriana, but the photo here looks like there's little room for her!

"My son makes fun of me and says I have the 'senior citizen home for dogs,' but that's okay. I love Christmas Rose. She's so perfect."

"Having her has been an adventure, and I'm loving every minute of it."

Editor's note: There were eager adopters waiting in line behind Adriana, but don't tell her that. ;)
