The Great Rat Race

30 happy rodents fly from Michigan to Texas

RatOn a Thursday evening in September, an anonymous someone left a cardboard box in HSHV's parking lot. Inside were 30 domesticated rats -- all packed in, with a few shreds of grass. There were males, females, adults and babies. Staff leaving work who happened upon the box carefully brought it inside and lovingly made up makeshift, temporary housing for the friendly creatures, and provided them with the necessary bedding, food and water for the night.

The following day, an Animal Care Technician loaned HSHV some empty aquariums to better house the rats, while the HSHV Shelter Veterinarian checked them out. Thankfully, all 30 rats were given a clean bill of health! Now... how would we find immediate, good homes for not one, not two, not three-- but thirty domesticated rodents?

As you may know, HSHV has many partners and connections! Kaia, a former HSHV staff member, originally ran Huron Valley Rat Rescue in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Now, Kaia is in Austin, Texas and is the head of Central Texas Rat Rescue (CTRR). CTRR is dedicated to the rescue of domesticated (pet) rats and quality adoption services-- like HSHV, CTRR spays/neuters and assesses all animals for health and temperament before adoption. Now, how to get the rats to Kaia...

Working with a pet-friendly shipping service, HSHV was able to safely and comfortably transport the 30 rats to CTRR in Austin. We're proud to say Kaia has found loving adopters for nearly all 30 rats! Thank you to CTRR and Kaia-- and to our many donors and supporters who made this Great Rat Race possible!
