Chill out kitties, Momma's here

Cats caught in air conditioner triumph

Annie Lennox and kittensOn a hot day in July, a momma cat sought shade just as a well-intentioned family sought air conditioning.

Unbeknownst to anyone, a cat with her five just-born kittens were sheltering inside the air conditioner. Hearing a loud cry, the family immediately turned the A/C off and called HSHV's 24/7 animal ambulance service for help.

Our Emergency Rescue Officer rushed to the scene, carefully removing the furry family from the unit and hurrying them back to the shelter for veterinary care. The kittens were covered in blood, but, thankfully, unharmed. The mom was a different story.

Now named Annie Lennox, the tiny grey and white tiger cat mom had several severe lacerations to her face. Worse, her front tooth had pierced her tongue. Surely Annie was in pain, but that wasn't what was on her mind. All Annie seemed to want were her kittens.

"I cleaned her babies, gave them back to her, and she calmed down right away," says HSHV Emergency Rescue Officer Steven Seever.

Barely five pounds herself, momma Annie happily nursed her five tiny tots who had been born just days before the accident. HSHV provided Annie with fluids, pain medication that wouldn't affect her kittens, and, ultimately, surgery to help her eat as well as continue to nurse.

"She's incredibly friendly and sweet despite pretty serious injuries," says HSHV employee Erin Overholser.

Annie's intense medical needs have kept her behind-the-scenes at HSHV, but her congeniality and courage haven't gone unnoticed. Annie's HSHV veterinarian is now her volunteer foster parent-- patiently feeding her (sometimes through a tube) and doting on her and her growing kittens until they're ready for adoption.
