Don't buy the stereotype

Cats are cool (+ our cats in foster are free!)

Black catThough June is Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat month, every day, we're looking to adopt more cats. Trouble is: people have strong opinions about cats... or do they?

PetSmart Charities recently conducted a survey to discover what our nation thinks about cats and cat owners.

The majority of people surveyed believe cats are attractive, smart, loving and cuddly... but also moody, grouchy, aloof and stubborn. And almost half of those surveyed still buy into the "cat lady" stereotype. Most of them believed that more people would have a cat if the stereotypes about cats and their parents dissolved. So how can we get people to see cats in a new light?

When it comes to humans negatively stereotyping other humans, research reveals one way to overcome these biases is to consciously have them meet each other-- so that misconceptions about a certain group can be corrected. When people get together, talk with or work with one another, they learn about individuals and correct inaccuracies about groups. Could the same thing work with cats? Could we just have people meet cats and through doing so, change their minds?

We're hoping so! With our current "Meet the Fosters" adoption promotion, you can meet, greet and spend time with our foster cats in their "natural" environment-- the home! And to entice people further, we're waiving the adoption fee for them; cats adopted from foster homes are free through July 5, 2015.

Cat house quota full? You can still help! According to the survey, nearly 75% of people know what they know about cats through friends or family. Help us break down "catty" stereotypes and spread the word about how each cat is an individual, and there's a cat for nearly everyone.

(Added bonus to adopting a cat: the lion's share of respondents said cat people are attractive!)
