Hot Diggity Dog!

Calvin chosen as area's 2015 Celebrity Spokesdog

Ann Arbor, MI (March 17, 2015) – You can’t help but smile when looking at Calvin, the furry face of the Humane Society of Huron Valley’s (HSHV’s) 2015 Walk & Wag and Run.

Calvin, Walk & Wag spokesdogMore than two dozen enthusiastic dog-lovers entered their canine companions in the Humane Society of Huron Valley’s Celebrity Spokesdog contest. Close to 800 people voted on their favorite. Blue and Brown-eyed Calvin, a 4-year-old 60 pound Boxer/Pit Bull Terrier mix Calvin “won by a nose,” with 35% of the votes.

“All of the dogs are deserving, and many voters mentioned they wanted all of the dogs to win!” says Joy Johnsen, Walk & Wag event coordinator. “Of course, really, all of the dogs did win—as they were adopted and now have loving families who obviously think the world of them.”

Entries spanned from young pups to senior dogs, from a certified therapy dog to an agility champion. Submissions included testimonials, professional photos, videos – even love poems—about their pups. And though the tally was close, Calvin won by 24 votes.

Calvin has come a long way since August 2012, when he arrived at HSHV from Tennessee. He came aboard the PetSmart Charities Rescue Waggin’, a life-saving program that transports puppies and dogs from struggling shelters to partner shelters with outstanding adoption programs. Then, Calvin was a malnourished dog with scabs on his elbows, possibly from lying on concrete all day long. He was submissive around men, suggesting potential abuse. And he was being overlooked by potential adopters.

“That was then, and this is now,” says his human dad, Mike Coval. “Calvin is now a very healthy 69 pounds. He gets more attention than a dog could ask for from hundreds of different people on a weekly basis. He brightens people’s day and even has helped change people’s perception toward not just his breed, but even for some who weren’t ‘dog people.’”

Calvin regularly goes to work with Coval, owner of Ann Arbor business COVAL Fitness & Sports Performance.

Calvin will be featured in HSHV’s advertisements and promotions, and of course, will be greeting his fans at the 2015 Walk & Wag event. Walk & Wag and Run is HSHV’s largest annual fundraiser, featuring a 5K run, a 1-mile walk, doggie games and contests, and lots of family-friendly activities on Saturday, May 16 at Washtenaw County’s Rolling Hills Park.
