"Fifty Strays of Grey" promotion stimulates senior cat adoption

Ann Arbor, MI (March 2, 2015) – With more than 50% of their cats up for adoption being over eight years old, the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) is making a bold move.

Fifty Strays of Grey“Fifty Strays of Grey,” a play off the current pop culture sensation “Fifty Shades of Grey,” offers adopters of senior cats 50% off—not to mention kindles provocative discussion.

“We also thought it was a fun twist on the theme, since cats are such loving yet commanding creatures. Cats know what they want and how to get it,” says Tanya Hilgendorf, HSHV’s CEO and President.

The mature cats at HSHV, it seems, are demanding good homes…and pronto.

“It’s time we shed the idea that older cats are less desirable,” says Krista Donohoo, Adoptions Manager at HSHV. “Actually, it’s quite the opposite. We like to say ‘they’re old enough not to climb your curtains, yet young enough to climb into your lap.’”

“Senior cats can be the best choice for families, too,” says Donohoo. “Their personality has already been developed, versus kittens where you never know what you’re going to get. You can get an adult cat that matches your lifestyle—whether you’re looking for a playful cat, a couch potato, a lap cat or an independent one—we can help you.”

Donohoo believes some may be hesitant to adopt a senior cat because they’re worried about lifespan. HSHV defines senior felines as those over eight years of age, but the lifespan of indoor cats averages about 15 years. In addition, there are numerous cases of cats living beyond 20 years.

HSHV is hoping the “Fifty Strays of Grey” promotion will spike adoptions of mature cats prior to the boom of “kitten season,” when mature cats can get overlooked for months.
