"Celebrity Spokesdog" contest is open

Ann Arbor, MI (February 24, 2015) – Think your dog is the best? Here’s your chance to prove it.

Casper, 2014's Celebrity SpokesdogThe Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) has announced its Walk & Wag “Celebrity Spokesdog” contest, projected to skyrocket an obscure pooch to superstardom. The winner will be featured in posters, brochures, newsletters and on the Internet, in addition to being paraded about town. The crowned canine will also appear in front of hundreds of doggie friends at Walk & Wag and Run, the area’s famed event for dogs and dog lovers to be held at Washtenaw County’s Rolling Hills Park on Saturday, May 16.

To enter, simply email a short essay on the special merits of your furry friend along with a photo to joyj@hshv.org. Dogs must have been adopted from the Humane Society of Huron Valley (or as HSHV says, “an HSHV alum”), must be friendly toward people and other animals, well-mannered, and able to attend media events including Walk & Wag on May 16. The deadline for entries is Monday, March 9. The community will vote on the lead entries, and the top dog will be announced March 18.

Casper, the 2014 reigning spokesdog (pictured here), triumphed with his heartwarming story. The 7-year-old hound/pit bull mix came to HSHV with another dog because they were no longer wanted. Though his canine companion was immediately adopted, Casper’s cancer diagnosis deterred many from adopting him. But his personality won over Ellen Weiss--and today, he is not only one of the most “pup”ular dogs HSHV has adopted, but also is thriving. Fame, it seems, has been great for Casper, who was also recently featured in a calendar.

Walk & Wag (and Run) is in its 36th year and is HSHV’s largest fundraiser of the year, generating essential resources to help homeless, abused and injured animals in our community. Walk & Wag is open to all animal lovers and their dogs, and features doggie games and contests, prizes, animal-themed merchandise, family-friendly activities, a 1-mile walk and 5K run.
