Squitten, the special (needs) kitten

When walking on small feet is no small feat

Squitten the kittyLook closely; notice something different about Squitten? Squitten has bilateral radial aplasia. She is missing bones and walks on her wrists, and it looks as though she has four back feet. Squitten came in with four siblings who were all just as adorable as she, but they had far fewer challenges.

After arriving at HSHV as a stray cat's litter, Squitten and her littermates, Squeakers, Skeeter, Squiggy and Scooter, were immediately fostered by a fantastic HSHV volunteer. Their foster mom not only gave the tiny felines a lot of love and caretaking, but also dutifully brought them in to our foster veterinary clinics so that their health could be continually monitored.

At first, we thought Squitten might need surgery. But as she grew, her foster family reported that Squitten was running, using the litter box, pulling herself up, and playing like any other kitten. She'd climb up on the couch, and jump off by flipping herself over! She was an acrobat who used her so-called disability as a special ability.

Though Squitten was the last in her litter to get adopted, she was waiting for just the right home. Her adoper, a cat lover and recent widow, saw Squitten as the special kitty she is. And today, Squitten walks proudly in her new home.
