HSHV finds loving homes for puppy mill victims

22 Whoodle puppies adopted in one day

puppy 7At a hearing in Livingston County District Court, on June 3rd, Margaret Elaine Komorny admitted failing to provide adequate care to dogs and puppies at her Raisin Tree Farms operation and released her rights, making them eligible for adoption. HSHV was asked by Livingston County Animal Control to help with the more vulnerable, and sicker of the dogs and puppies, taking in nearly three dozen animals for housing and veterinary care. We were able to help because of the generosity of wonderful supporters like you.

These severely neglected dogs are Whoodles, a mix of poodle and soft-coated Wheaton Terrier. “Most of us at the shelter had never even heard of a Whoodle,” said Deb Kern, HSHV Marketing Director. “When people began lining up in front of the shelter at 7:00 am to get a chance to adopt one of the puppies, we realized that it would be far from a normal adoption day.”

Two hundred inquiries by phone and over 100 electronic messages later, the day culminated with the adoption of 22 puppies and one sweet momma.

“We really are fortunate that our amazing volunteers and our staff embraced the situation and were able to handle the crowds that came,” says Kern. “Everyone was very patient and we know many happy families were thrilled to find their new furry companions”

Since last week, two other adult Whoodles have also been adopted, and one 6-year-old adult, named Eowyn, remains available for adoption. Currently, two other Whoodle moms, who are nursing six puppies each, are getting fantastic care in HSHV foster homes.  They will become available for adoption in  six to eight weeks.
