Don't let heartworm scare you off from adopting

Simone is a wonderful companion

I adopted Simone (then Honeycake) nearly 1.5 years ago. HSHV did not know much about her because she hadn't been around very long, and she had come in on the Puppy Waggin' from Little Rock, AK.

What we knew was that she was a bit shy and that she was heartworm positive. I was a bit unnerved and disheartened upon finding out that she had heartworm. The stories that I had heard up until then was that it was a risky treatment that could result in the absolute worst. But each time that I looked at Simone, her ears perked up and her tail started wagging, and I couldn't leave without her.

We started her heartworm treatment at HSHV just a couple of months after the adoption, and though it was a long and sometimes grueling (and messy) treatment that involved some heavy monitoring, she pulled through it strongly. Simone was very timid and shy when I first adopted her, and she has lightened up tremendously, although she's still scared easily at times.

She loves long walks now more than anything. And she's heartworm NEGATIVE today! She is healthy, loving, quirky, and constantly craves attention and cuddles. She is undoubtedly my best friend. Thank you to HSHV for assistance through the adoption and through her treatment as well; I can't imagine my world today without her.
