Our Team Captain, Finn, is the third Jack Russell Terrier to join our family and a true ambassador for the breed! Finn loves to be active and go go go! He enjoys kayaking, playing with his pack and traveling to interesting places as we did last fall to Provincetown Mass.  He is friendly and outgoing, loves everyone, 2 legged and 4 legged alike, and his mission in life is to convince everyone that a Jack Russell should be part of every household.

Over the years I've shared my life with so many wonderful animals, my only regret being that they don't live as long as we do. I still remember my first dog - her name was Coffee. She was a "Heinz 57" as my dad used to say. She was a big lumbering fuzzy pile of love and the best friend a girl could have. I still remember the day she died, and asking my mom if she was in heaven. She told me yes, and that we would see her again someday. I'm counting on it.

My love of animals continued while I earned 2 degrees in the field of Animal Science. And although my career eventually took a much different turn, animals have continued to play a very large role in my daily life. My partner and I presently share our lives with 7 dogs, 4 house cats (2 adopted from HSHV as seniors), many barn cats and 3 horses. We have raised 11 Leader Dogs for the Blind, and we have an active therapy dog who visits the veterans’ hospital and the library weekly.

This is the second year we are participating in Walk-n-Wag.  I have visited and adopted from many shelters, and HSHV has an incredibly caring staff operating within the most animal care centric facility I have ever seen. They are not just a shelter, but an integral part of the community, helping to ensure that homeless and abused animals have the best opportunity to find the right forever home.  They also offer educational programs which ultimately foster greater care and respect for all the animals that share this earth with us.  I believe that animals improve people's lives in so many ways. They love us without judgment, with such unassuming innocence and trust, and without expectation of anything in return.  That's why this event, and fundraising for HSHV, is so important to me. Too many shelters seem to put people's needs first, but the thing that strikes me about HSHV is that they are all about the animals. And in my humble view, that is exactly as it should be.

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man"

-- Mahatma Gandhi (1869 - 1948)
