Tips for pet owners who celebrate "Tricks or Treats"
Celebrating the holidays with your pet is fun for most families but it can be stressful for some animals. Review these tips to make sure your holiday is safe for your four-legged companion.
- Costume (do or don't)
Some pets do not seem to mind clothing adornments. Many regularly wear bandannas. If your dog sulks, hides or tries to pull away from clothing please do not force them to wear a costume for your own enjoyment.
- More on Costumes
If you do play dress-up, please never put a mask over your dogs, nose or mouth. Anything that can imped their breathing is dangerous. Also, watch out for string and elastic that can hinder movement or restrict walking.
- Candy Bags and Bowls
Chocolate and many sugar substitutes are very dangerous to dogs. Keep candy bowls and bags well out of reach from your dog.
- Ding Dong Doorbells
For some animals activity at the front door is cause for an alarm response. Many are used to alerting their families that someone is there. It's also a very easy time for pets to slip out the door. We encourage you to consider keeping your pets in a separate part of the house. Make sure your pets have an idea tag or better yet a microchip I.D.
- Tricksters and Pranks
Devil's Night and Halloween can be dangerous times for pets that are left outside unattended. Please keep your companion inside. There is also increased traffic and unfamiliar sights and sounds that can scare your pets.
You can enjoy your holiday and make holidays enjoyable for your furry friends as well. Keep them safe and healthy.
