Two male cats won our hearts by their affection for one another.

Our beloved cat, Milka, died two years ago. We missed her so much; we did not know whether we really wanted to adopt another cat and go through this heartbreak again, but the pull was too strong. I found myself watching cat videos on YouTube and visiting the "Adoptable Animals" section on the HSHV website just to dream a little... In November 2014, I finally decided to go to the HSHV, knowing full well that this would most likely end in adoption.

There were so many beautiful cats waiting for their new homes, I did not know how I would ever be able to make a decision... One of the cages was shared by two male adult cats: Rupert (3 years old) and Oberon (1 year old). They were very good looking guys, but what really caught my attention was the visible affection they had for one another... They were very shy and huddled together, but with gentle words and patience, they let me pet them a little. I was hooked. I took my wife to see them, and they won her heart, too.

A few days later, we came to pick them up. When we released them at home, they immediately hid under a futon and stayed there for over a week, coming out at night to clean their food bowls and use the litter box.
They have been with us for five weeks now. They are still skittish, but they got used to us and their new home. They come to sleep with us, and appear to be on Cloud 9 when petted. They have hearty appetites and are very playful - they can make quite a racket running up and down the stairs at breakneck speed. They still keep close, like the best of friends, calling each other with chirping-like sounds.

One of the volunteers at HSHV expressed her surprise that they were not listed as a "Perfect Pair", and this prompted me to make a decision quickly, as I became worried that one of them would be adopted without the other - how sad that would have been.

We love them dearly, and I think they love it here, too. I'm so glad they have each other's company, as it makes me feel less guilty about keeping them under "house arrest." That guilt made me let Milka be an indoor/outdor cat, and this shortened her life, happy though it was for 13 years.
