Fishing Tackle Can Be Harmful to Wildlife

Please pick up and dispose of fishing line and unused lures

DuckInjuredHanging out at the lake and fishing may seem like a fun summer activity but sadly too many animals find the discarded remnants and those can be harmful and even deadly.

The Humane Society of Huron Valley's Animal Rescue Department has been busy this summer responding to calls about wildlife caught in fishing line and lures.

This duck was the last victim, rescued on August 5th at Gallop Park in Ann Arbor. She had two hooks attached to line embedded in her skin - one hooked in her bill and the other in her wing causing her to have to walk with her head to the side and down. Every time she tried to raise her head the barbs of the hook sunk deeper into her skin. Can you imagine her pain?

According to the Humane Society of the United States, thousands of birds, turtles and other wildlife die each year because they become entangled in fishing line and thousands more need medical attention due to injuries from other trash that has not been placed in secure waste receptacles.

If you see line, hooks or other trash such as plastic bottles or lids when you are out enjoying your summer activities, please stop and pick it up. Your act of kindness could keep another animal, like this female mallard, from enduring a painful injury.

If you live in Washtenaw County and you do see an injured animal, please call the HSHV 24-Hour Animal Rescue Department at (734) 661-3512.
