HSHV rescued Pangur Ban (formerly Centaurus) from a hoarding situation in an unheated garage. Seven months after adoption, he's blossomed!

In our search for a new furry friend, my husband spotted a white cat high up on a shelf. This little guy wouldn't budge, and he was shaking. But, when my husband held his hand up for sniffing, he was rewarded with head butts.

"I want Pangur Ban."

Once the cat has a name, you know you're bringing it home! The name Pangur Ban comes from an old Irish poem about a scholar and his white cat. This modern cat, we found out, had come from a hoarding situation: many cats living in live traps in an unheated winter garage.

The employees at HSHV gave us many tips and cautioned us to keep our expectations in check. He might never warm up to people. He might never be a lap cat. It might take months for him to come out of his sanctuary room. He might get destructive. But Pangur already felt like ours, and we were ready to give him the time he needed to feel happy.

The first day, Pangur Ban wedged himself between a computer and a wall, only coming out to eat when all humans left the room. The next day, he cautiously stepped out as long as I was lying on the floor. If I sat up, back to the corner he ran.

Slowly but surely, Pangur Ban got braver. We found out he LOVES being petted, and loves seeing what our other cat, Professor McGonagall, is up to. Now, we can brush him. We can play with him. We can clip his claws. We can ALMOST pick him up (maybe in another few months).

Pangur Ban has turned into a cat who adores his people. When I go to bed at night, Pangur jumps up to be the little spoon. When I'm watching TV, Pangur is on my lap. And when I'm typing a story singing his praises, he's napping next to me on the couch. We call him the Love Sponge, and we're so glad we took a chance on the terrified little guy who wanted his head scratched.
