We're bird people now!

At the time, we didn't necessarily think of ourselves as "bird people." Sure, we had owned a cockatiel several years ago, and I had a couple years' experience working with large parrots at an avian vet clinic. We appreciated them, certainly, as we do all animals. Still, neither of us really foresaw another parrot in our future . . . until we heard about the African Greys that had come in to HSHV with the hoarding case of 42 parrots in the fall of 2015. Greys were always my favorite when I worked for the vet, and we loved reading about scientist Irene Pepperberg's "Alex" who had demonstrated an amazing ability to learn language. We are fascinated by the behavior and cognitive ability of the animal kingdom, and so adopting a clever African Grey seemed like it would be an exciting, fun new world. We visited with the Greys at HSHV, and immediately were smitten with "Stewie," now known as "Presto." From the time we brought him home, we fell head over heels in love with him. He is smart, funny, sweet, and full of personality. He is turning into a great talker, and especially loves to say his new name and "Hey, Birdy Bird!" He learns new tricks with amazing speed, and often likes to get creative and put his own unique spin on them. He delights in destroying new toys with gusto, often hanging upside-down with dramatic flair while he shreds them. And he loves head scratches, and will hold your finger gently with his foot and coo while you pet him. Yes, we are officially bird crazy now, and couldn't be happier about it!
