Humane Society of Huron Valley earns coveted 4-star rating from Charity Navigator rating for 7th year straight

Only 4% of evaluated charities have received at least seven consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that HSHV outperforms most other charities in America.

Ann Arbor, MI (June 18, 2018) The Humane Society of Huron Valley’s (HSHV’s) strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency have earned them a seventh consecutive 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator. Only 4% of evaluated charities have received at least seven consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that HSHV outperforms most other charities in America.

"We are honored to receive Charity Navigator’s highest rating,” said Tanya Hilgendorf, HSHV’s CEO. “This distinction reflects our accountability to all our supporters and commitment to remain true to our mission to provide loving, responsible care for all animals in our community. We do not take the privilege of caring for our community’s most vulnerable lightly. We owe it to those we serve and to those who enable us to do this important work to be the best we can possibly be. It is our obligation to be cautious with our resources, to abide by best practices, and to measure and openly report the results of our efforts.”

Since 2002, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a 4-star rating. This exceptional designation from Charity Navigator sets Humane Society of Huron Valley apart from its peers and demonstrates to the public its trustworthiness.

“It’s important our donors trust that we’re using their donations wisely to support the loving, responsible care of every animal in our community,” says Jaclyn Portaro, VP Development and Marketing at HSHV. “Our 4-star Charity Navigator rating demonstrates to our supporters our good governance and financial accountability. We’re proud to be the only 4-star rated humane society in Michigan and included in the top 4% of nonprofits in the country.”

Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating is one of many honors received by HSHV this past year. Accolades include a fifth consecutive save rate award from the Michigan Pet Fund Alliance and winning multiple categories in Current Magazine’s Best of Washtenaw Awards, notably “Best Nonprofit.”
