"All I can see are ribs and hips."

14-year-old dog gets food, loving care, and a fresh start

“All I can see are ribs and hips.”Smokey before

Smokey had been left behind by his owner, who was supposed to be gone for only a couple of days. It had been nearly a month.

HSHV Cruelty Investigators arrived to find Smokeya very tiny, very skinny 14-year-old Miniature Pinscher. Though he was obviously very hungry, Smokey was also very happy. And happy-go-lucky. In fact, Smokey seemed to know his luck was about to improve—trusting HSHV staff would take care of him as he gleefully hopped into the rescue vehicle.

“We had to crack the window a bit,” says Naomi Smith, HSHV Cruelty Investigator. “Smokey couldn’t help but poke his cute little head out—and it seemed like he knew good things were ahead of him.”

Like treats. Lots of treats. Hugs, too. Volunteers and staff doted over the friendly fellow, whose slight anxiety soon gave way to interest in all the goings on at HSHV—and all the people. He had arthritis, cataracts, hair loss and a heart murmur—but no one, including him, seemed to notice.

Because Smokey saw love. Felt love. And just a day after he was made available for adoption, he found his forever home.
