That's kitten for "Rescue me!"

Nugget the kittenOn a cold, wet, and rainy night, a security guard at an Ypsilanti factory was out doing his nightly perimeter check when he heard a faint cry. The crying got louder as he approached a storm drain. Shining his flashlight down the drain confirmed it: a kitten had fallen in.

Not knowing what was in the storm drain and concerned they'd scare the kitten further down it, the guard and his partner made several attempts to coax the kitten over to them. No luck! So they called HSHV's 24/7 Rescue Service

HSHV's Rescue Officer Naomi arrived on scene.

"Initially, I had a plan of placing a trap at one end of the drain and patiently waiting for the kitten to get hungry enough to climb into it.  But once I climbed down into the drain and could see the terrified and tiny kitten sitting in the cold storm water crying for help, I knew she was never going to go for the trap. That would mean she would have to truck through the water which she was desperately trying to avoid!"

Naomi tried enticing the kitten with smelly, canned cat food and calling to her for minutes on end. The kitten was sitting just out of reach -- about five feet from where Naomi was. She grabbed the equipment she thought she would need, suited up in protective gear, and went in to retrive the "little nugget."

After carefully maneuvering herself into the drain, the kitten was now just inches out of Naomi's reach.

"It was soooo close, there was no way I was leaving without that little creature. I mustered up all my strength and reached with my body fully extended out and grabbed the kitten!"

Once she reached the surface, Naomi spent a few minutes drying the frightened, cold little kitten off and warming her up. She checked the kitten over for injuries-- and thankfully found none! Naomi placed the tiny girl into a carrier with some food "that she scarfed down," says Naomi, and brought her back to the shelter for a shot at a forever home. About two weeks later, two-month old Nugget was adopted by a wonderful person who understood her shy nature, and wanted to shower her with patience and love.

I named her "Nugget," says Naomi, "Because I could not stop calling her that! Isn't she the cutest little nugget you've ever seen?"
