5 Resolutions You Can Be Happy About!
As we turn
the calendar page, many hope for a better 2018 than 2017. Get to the gym, eat
healthy, be a better friend. Sometimes (often?), we set our sights high, can’t
stick with it, and get discouraged. But never fear: this year, we have great
ways to fulfill your resolutions—that are do-able and fulfilling!
Here’s how
to “make good” on some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions:
- Get
Fit/Lose Weight – Avoid the crowded gym; come to HSHV! When you volunteer
as a dog walker, you’ll not only be getting exercise yourself, you’ll be giving
a homeless dog the time of his/her life. Not sure this will achieve your goal? A
University of Missouri study showed that walking a dog was more effective in
losing weight than having a gym membership or joining a diet plan! And a
Northwestern University study revealed walking dogs makes you happier. We
certainly know it makes our dogs happier; simply watch when a volunteer dog
walker enters the shelter and see the dogs jump for joy. The dog walking
schedule is very flexible, and you can sign up for a volunteer orientation
session at www.hshv.org/volunteer.
- Take
Better Care of Yourself – Don’t feel guilty taking me-time; you need
it! Self care prevents burnout, combats
stress and helps you focus. Now’s the time to try a “Yoga with Cats” class at the Tiny Lions lounge and adoption Center. Thursday
evenings and Sunday mornings, our beloved instructors (along with their
talented people) hold Hatha-style yoga classes, good for any level yogi. And
you’ll get twice the feel-good feeling, too; not only will you enjoy the break,
but also your $10 class fee goes to helping homeless animals in our community.

- Learn
Something New – No matter how many animals you’ve met, the next will teach you something new. When you foster parent for HSHV, you’ll have
the opportunity to gain new skills—whether training a dog to help him get
adopted faster or bottle feeding orphaned kittens to help them survive. In
addition to training, HSHV provides all veterinary care, food and other
supplies for fostering. You supply the love and open mind! Learn more and get started at www.hshv.org/foster.
- Make New
Friends – Whether a “dog person” or a “cat person,” you know there
are traits all animal lovers share. HSHV hosts and participates in all sorts of
events where you can meet others like you. Walk & Wag, for instance, is May
19 and is the biggest pup party of the year, not to mention HSHV’s biggest
fun-draiser; hundreds of people and their dogs come out to enjoy dog-friendly
activities and events. See our whole calendar of events at www.hshv.org/events.
- Enjoy Life
More – You probably already know this—as animals’ unconditional love and
unbridled enthusiasm is contagious! Research
reveals animals help us emotionally, lessen our loneliness, and give us a sense
of purpose and fulfillment. Enjoy your life more and bring more animals into it—adopt, or if you can’t adopt, visit the cat café or volunteer. You’ll
be happy you did! www.hshv.org www.tinylions.org
