No Turkey!

But dozens of birds were rescued and adopted

On Tuesday, October 27, 2015, the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) rescued forty-two (42) birds, three (3) degus and one (1) rabbit from a home filled with trash, living inSun Conure crowded cages full of feces.

“We’re glad we got there when we did,” said Matt Schaecher, HSHV's Chief Operating Officer. Investigators found it necessary to wear respirators just to enter the home. “If this situation persisted longer, it could have been much worse. Fortunately, the owner surrendered all of the animals to us.”

HSHV staff brought the animals to the shelter, quickly creating clean, bird-friendly places for each of them. Each animal was examined by two veterinarians, including-- for the birds-- an avian specialist. Some were cleared for adoption, while others needed additional medical treatment.

When it was time for adoption for many of the birds, extra volunteers came in, extra staff were scheduled, the phone lines rang off the hook, and eager adopters lined up at the door. Many stood in line for hours while they waited to view the birds (only 2 people were allowed in at a time in order to make for the least stressful environment for the birds as well as the potential adopters, and the press, despite insistance, were not allowed in). As HSHV wanted to ensure loving, responsible matches, potential adopters were subjected to a battery of screening questions, avian veterinary references, and even more questions. 24 birds were adopted in one, exhausting but exhilarating day!

"Everyone was very friendly and helpful -- Great crew!" said Sherry E., who adopted Howard, a Ringneck Parrot. She says Howard -- now Zeus is "absolutely awesome. He is so social and adapted very quickly."

Another experienced adopter who has had other rescued birds says her new feathered family member Meeko is "the smartest I've ever owned. I adore him; we're totally best friends," Beth S. says. She hoped the other adopters and she could stay in touch.

As the other birds and animals needing treatment got healthy and received veterinary clearance, they were released for adoption. Lovebirds, Conures, Cockatoos, African Grays, Parakeets, Cockatiels, Ringnecks and a Lorikeet all found loving new homes, as did the rabbit!  At the moment of this story, only two lovebirds and the degus have yet to find their forever homes. The lovebirds will be receiving additional needed TLC in a foster home first, and the degus have recently been released for adoption. (Find out about degus and why they make great companions here!)

We're so very thankful to all the adopters, the wanna-be adopters, the volunteers, and all our supporters. You shook a tail feather and made these happy tales happen!
