After 9 years without a pet and the loss of a family member, these two wonderful little souls became my bunnies from heaven.

In June of 2016 I suddenly and very unexpectedly lost my dad just three days after Father's Day. I had been researching bunnies as pets for the last two years, but before this loss I had been planning to wait another couple years and then take my dad off to visit the rescues. My dad throughout my life encouraged me to have pets and had a great love of animals.

After his passing, I felt the need for a couple little fuzzy souls in my life again as I had gone nine years without a pet (the longest I've gone). I worried whether it were the right time, but after talking to a number of friends who reassured me that this was not just a hasty decision but just a change in the time table, I started to look around at rescues. I knew I wanted a bonded pair, but I wasn't finding quite the right fit. I saw a Petfinder ad for two bonded Rex brothers at HSHV; I was certain at that point that I was going to come home with a single bunny from another rescue but decided to check out these two boys at HSHV anyway. I tried not to get my hopes up and even felt certain it wasn't going to be quite right, either. However, as soon as the kennel door opened, it was a different story!

Out popped the two most curious and friendly bunnies ever! They came right up to me and my friend I'd brought along. They didn't mind our fawning over them and petting them in the typical bunny no-no zones! They tried to jump in our laps... The feeling in that room was just different than with all the other bunnies I had been meeting. I honestly felt like my dad was there saying, "These are your bunnies."

We joked with the volunteer about their names and agreed they needed new ones. These two little bunnies apparently arrived one day in September to the front door of HSHV in a box, just left there. It still breaks my heart for these two sweet and incredibly intelligent little guys. With the help of the volunteer, I decided to rename them Dodger and Jack after the Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist" character Artful Dodger/Jack Dawkins. They are my two lovable orphan scamps!

Sometimes I look at Dodger and Jack and can't believe how lucky I am to have them in my life. Sometimes I look at them and feel a little sad that without such a great loss, they would not be here with me. Sometimes I look at Dodger and Jack and think that maybe they were once "Velveteen Rabbits" that someone thought weren't real and so placed them in a box and left them at HSHV where the volunteers loved them until they were real, and I am lucky enough to get to continue loving them. Sometimes I look at them and know my dad is here and these are my bunnies sent from heaven.

Thank you, HSHV, for all that you do and all the lives you are changing!
