How one pitbull scaredycat fell in love with a pitbull

We came to the Empty the Shelters event with high hopes of finding our new family member. I had recently divorced, and my former husband kept our dog, as he'd be alone in the house without him. We'd had Rupert almost 10 years, so a home without a dog felt strange and sad. Rupert was an English Mastiff/Great Dane mix, so drool and dog smell didn't bother me.

I have to admit to a certain amount of trepidation when it came to pitbulls. I know they get bad press and not the killers they are made out to be. But a few of the pitbulls I have known had aggressive tendencies and I was nervous.

I wanted a small dog, a cuddly companion who would bark if there was trouble. I didn't want a guard dog, or a scary dog.

My son, his girlfriend and I came to the shelter that day at 10 am, and they opened at 11. I honestly thought we were coming too early, but we were already 30 people deep when we got there! I started to have concerns that we would even find a dog at all.

We finally got in and made the rounds, checking out every kennel, looking for a face that called to us.
And my son found one. The moment he saw Jasper, he was hooked. We took him for a walk to get to know him. He pulled like crazy and was so strong! I was feeling very worried about him. But Alex was adamant. This was the one. He knew it.

So, I squatted down next to Jasper to get a better look at him and see if I could come to terms with my fears.
He moved very quickly- to lean himself into me for cuddles. And that was it. I agreed and we took him home.
I won't lie and say he's perfect. The cat hates him and he just wants to love him. He still pulls the leash, but much less than at first.

But he is the best snuggler on this planet. Period. And he gives the daintiest kisses, no full face licks for Jasper, just a little lick to show his love. He hasn't barked once. Not once. He knows commands like sit, shake, wait. And he hasn't shown one second of aggression. Not one. He is family. Just like that.

And I will never stereotype a breed again.
