Humane Society of Huron Valley receives 4-star rating again

Animals unsure what that means

Ann Arbor, MI (October 13, 2015) - Though animals may not be good money managers, the organization that cares for them in our community is.

Yawning dogFor the fourth straight year, the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) has received Charity Navigator’s top 4-star rating for “sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency.” According to Charity Navigator, only 8% of the over 8,000 charities they rate have received a 4-star “exceptional” rating for 4 or more years.

“We are honored to receive this top independent rating,” says Tanya Hilgendorf, HSHV’s CEO. “To achieve our mission—to support the loving, responsible care for all the animals in our community—requires the support of our community. We owe it to all our constituencies to be cautious with our resources, to abide by best practices, to measure and openly report the results of our efforts, and to continually improve.”

2014 was a record-breaking year for adoptions and animals saved.  During the year, HSHV helped over 14,000 animals, including sick and injured wildlife, and even more humans with mission-related services, including pet food assistance, safe harbor for the pets of families in crisis, and spaying and neutering to prevent overpopulation. More information is on their annual report.

“In addition to ensuring we’re responsible with their gifts,” Jaci Nicols, VP of Marketing & Development for HSHV says, “donors also want to know how their donation will make a difference.”

HSHV accepts all companion animals in need, regardless of age or condition and has been recognized by Michigan Pet Fund Alliance as “Outstanding Open Admission Shelter with the Best Save Rate.”

“Our adopters, clients, customers, volunteers, staff and donors hold us to a high standard and keep raising the bar,” says Jaci Nicols, HSHV’s VP of Marketing and Development. “We work very hard to earn and keep public’s trust, and we’re proud to be recognized in the top 8% of the best non-profits in the country.”

The Humane Society of Huron Valley is one of only four animal-focused charities in Michigan to currently hold a 4-star Charity Navigator rating.

Animals at HSHV declined to comment on the Charity Navigator rating, but expressed their gratitude to donors responsible for their full food dishes with tail-wagging and purring.
