BISSELL Sponsors Free Adoption Day at HSHV - Saturday, May 5

Adopt an adult cat or dog FREE

Ann Arbor, MI (April 27, 2018) – The Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) hopes to find loving homes for nearly 80 dogs and cats on Saturday, May 5, a free adoption day.

This is BISSELL’s tenth “Empty the Shelters” event in the past two years, and the second in which HSHV will be participating. Last year, HSHV found homes for 64 companion animals through this event, and more than 9,000 pets nationwide have found homes through this initiative.

“We’re over the moon to do this again,” says Krista Donohoo, HSHV’s Adoption Manager. “Last year, we had a dog who’d been waiting over 18 months to find a home, and her ideal adopter came in during Empty the Shelters. She’d lost her 13-year old Lab mix several years ago and heard we were running a big adoption event.”

Over half (52%) the people who adopt during Empty the Shelters events are adopting from a shelter for the first time, and 99.4% of them report they have or plan to recommend adoption to their friends and families.

“This is a way of getting the word out about the great animals we have in the shelter,” says Donohoo. “Some people have the wrong idea about shelters—or about rescuing—so this is a fantastic opportunity to bring them in to see our state-of-the-art shelter—not to mention meet their new best friend.”

While the term “free adoption” can alarm concerned animal lovers who worry unscrupulous people may adopt, HSHV reminds people that their adoption policies remain the same—whatever the fee.

“Whether they’re paying an adoption fee or not, we meet with every potential adopter to discuss the real costs of caring for a pet,” says Donohoo. “And not only do studies show it—but we’ve also seen ourselves that people who adopt a pet for free value their companions just as much as those who pay.  It’s really the match, not the money, that matters, and we try hard to help people find the pets who will best fit their family and lifestyle.”

HSHV follows up with all adoptions to help ensure it’s a good fit, and when it’s not, the adopter returns the animal to HSHV. Last year, only two of the 64 animals adopted through this event had been returned, and many, like the adopter of Jasper, reported how happy they were with the animal they found.

HSHV encourages those who want to take advantage of the BISSELL-sponsored free adoption day to complete an application earlier and drop it off at the shelter prior to Saturday, May 5. Applications can be downloaded at www.hshv.org/howtoadopt. Adopters must be age 21 or over, and bring government-issued ID with current address—or government-issued ID with a current utility bill or lease with their correct address. Those who already have a dog and wish to adopt another dog over 30 pounds must bring their current dog and at least one other adult to help handle their dog on Saturday. Dogs cannot be on choke or prong collars, and must be on a non-retractable leash. See the animals available for adoption at www.hshv.org/adopt.

HSHV will be open for adoptions 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 5.
