Your dog gone great?

Enter the "Celebrity Spokesdog" contest

Ann Arbor, MI (March 3, 2016) – You think you've got the most caring, loving dog ever... and here's your chance to prove it.

Calvin the 2015 celebrity spokesdogThe Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) is launching its annual Walk & Wag “Celebrity Spokesdog” contest, sure to spotlight a deserving canine -- but this year, there's a twist. The top dog will be the most altruistic one. How?

First, entrants need only email a short essay on what makes their dog special along with a photo to joyj@hshv.org. Dogs must have been adopted from the Humane Society of Huron Valley (or as HSHV says, “an HSHV alum”), must be friendly toward people and other animals, well-mannered, and able to attend media events including Walk & Wag on May 21. Then, HSHV will launch fundraising websites for the top three dogs.

The winning crown will be given to the most philanthropic pooch -- that is, the one who raises the most money for abused, injured and homeless animals in our community.

"Dogs are caring creatures, and we all know how grateful adopted animals are to have homes,” says Joy Johnsen, HSHV's Special Events Coordinator. “The Celebrity Spokesdog contest recognizes a dog that used to be homeless and now is leaving legacy for other animals still awaiting a family. The winning dog is an inspiration to us all.”

In addition to a professional photo session, the crowned canine may be featured in HSHV's posters, brochures, newsletters and social media. And he or she will be paraded about town, appearing in front of hundreds of doggie friends at Walk & Wag, the area’s largest event for dogs and dog lovers at Washtenaw County’s Rolling Hills Park on Saturday, May 21.

The deadline for Celebrity Spokesdog entries is Monday, March 14. Top dog fundraising websites will run April 1-30.

Brown and blue-eyed Calvin, the 2015 reigning spokesdog (pictured here), rose to superstardom after a rough start. He'd been transported to HSHV from Tennessee in 2012. He was malnourished, wary of men, and had scabs on his elbows-- possibly from lying on concrete all day long. But all that changed when he was adopted by Mike Coval and his partner Anna. Calvin gained weight, confidence, a smile, and a home. When not at home, Calvin attends work with Coval, a personal trainer, and acts as an ambassador for his mixed pit bull breed and dogs in general.

"He brightens people's day," says Coval.

Walk & Wag (and Run) is in its 37th year and is HSHV’s largest fundraiser of the year, generating essential resources to help homeless, abused and injured animals in our community. Walk & Wag is open to all animal lovers and their dogs, and features doggie games and contests, prizes, animal-themed merchandise, family-friendly activities, a 1-mile walk and 5K run.
