I am very concerned with the direction Michigan seems to be headed as it relates to the unnecessary and cruel hunting of wolves and Sandhill Cranes.  Appointments to the Department of Natural Resources, Natural Resources Commission and Wolf Management Advisory Council are overrepresented by special interest groups in favor of trophy hunting and the use of cruel leg-hold traps.

Like the majority of Michigan citizens, I am opposed to setting hunting seasons for both wolves and Sandhill Cranes, as neither is scientifically sound, necessary or humane.  Hunting of wolves, highly intelligent and social animals, will damage the small population, destroy pack families and leave pups to starve.  Similarly, unnecessary harm will come to Cranes -- who mate for life and stay with their sole fledglings for nearly a year until they can set off on their own.

Wolves are still extremely vulnerable, and Michigan should stay clear of the nationally embarrassing and tragic mess resulting from Wisconsin's hastily established wolf hunt.  And, there is simply no necessity around hunting Cranes, a federally protected species.

For both wolves and Sandhill Cranes, farmers already have effective avenues for nuisance control and even receive financial payouts in the rare cases of wolf depredation.

That is why the Detroit Zoo, Audubon Society, and many other well-respected conservation and animal welfare organizations opposed Senate Resolutions 15 & 20, and Michigan voters have rejected wolf hunting, twice!

Rather than taking Michigan backwards, we ask that policy makers represent the majority of Michigan residents; defend our vulnerable wildlife and precious natural resources; and embrace a future that promotes, expands and economically supports non-consumptive wildlife activities.
